FQPA 1996 Video
Pennsylvania componet of the Northeastern IPM Center
The Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 video has four parts: an introduction and three modules. The introduction includes a message from the Pennsylvania Farmer's Association and a brief discussion on why pesticides are important to control pests, the rigorous testing that pesticides must pass before they can be marketed for use, and the two previous laws that the FQPA amends.
Module One examines how the EPA is looking at old pesticides in a new way. In the video, information is presented about the following:
- How the EPA uses the No Observable Effects Level to evaluate health effects of pesticides.
- The process of how compounds will be evaluated under the FQPA.
- The introduction of the risk cup concept.
Module Two describes some potential outcomes of the Food Quality Protection Act. Specifically, the video looks at the following:
- The three classes of compounds, that are the most risky in terms of human health effects, that the EPA will review first.
- An example of a compound going through the evaluation process as described in Module One.
- What happens when risk exceeds the acceptable risk level.
Module Three explains how you can be a part of the FQPA decision-making process. The video provides the following two methods:
- Gain as much information as you can on how the FQPA could affect you.
- Provide this information to decision-makers and those who will influence hose decisions.
This video has been sent to all the PA county extension offices, National Agricultural Pesticide Impact Assessment Program state representatives, and other groups interested in the FQPA. The FQPA video will be used as an informational tool at meetings to help people understand the issues surrounding the Food Quality Protection Act.
